update: the duct tape wasn't great, instead I ended up drilling two small (4mm) holes near the corners, and putting in small bolts (note the nuts are at the top because they take up more space, washers on the other side hold the plate):.

This may not be a good solution if you often scan heavy and thick books

My faster solution is to use duct tape (see picture below). a thread on '' (that is no longer available unfortunately) described a solution with small metal replacement tabs.turn it over, and note the three small black plastic tabs supporting the glass plate on one side (one or more may be bent inwards).carefully separate the black top part (which holds the glass plate) from the scanner base.remove the two screws from the holes that held the hinges of the lid.turn the scanner back, and remove the lid by lifting it straight up.turn the scanner upside down (hold the lid well while doing this), and remove the two screws below the front panel.swith the transport lock switch to the 'locked' position, both at the back of the scanner, and under the lid (!).

disconnect the power cable, the USB cable, and the cable going from the lid to the base at the back of the scanner.

It is caused by the fact that on one side the glass plate is supported by three very flimsy plastic tabs, which bend downwards when some pressure is applied to the plate (as from a heavy book). When you hear this, switch the scanner off immediately.Įven worse, from that moment on you may never be able to scan again without this problem occurring. When scanning a heavy book, you may get the following: the scan head stops, and a terrible grinding ratchet sound is heard from the scanner. A clear advantage of this scanner was the high quality high res scanning capability, a clear drawback the poor build quality.
